A little while back I had setup an old pc with a copy of fedora and gnokii in an attempt to build a basic sms gateway - while I got things working it was far from a truly functional machine as I couldn't get the sms daemon (smsd) that shipped with gnokii to work correctly with MySQL. As a result both incoming and outgoing messages were stored as basic text files rather than in a database - yuck!
I have now reconfigured the same machine with ubuntu and after still no success with getting a build of gnokii to work with MySQL (and pulling out all my hair in the process) I have installed gammu - I'm still a little unsure of the relationship between gnokii and gammu, but I'm sure there's a link in there somewhere.
The phone I am using is an "old" Nokia 7250i I had lying around with a USB phone charger to prevent it going flat.
The gateway is up and running and I will soon be integrating some php scripts to allow interaction and automation of sending/receiving sms (and possibly mms, ringtones, etc.) - if you're interested, feel free to drop me an email
You can try it out by sending an SMS to +61 415 061 606 with the word "shout" before your message and it (should) be displayed below. (for those of you in Australia you can sms to 0415061606)
I'll be posting progress of this project on here as it unfolds...
